Rudder Rangers continue to lead the way as the Class of 2023 begins the next chapter of their life as Rudder High School graduates.

Valedictorian Miranda Skaggs said it is fitting that they are graduating in “the Jordan year,” referencing Michael Jordan’s basketball number 23, because it is a once in a lifetime experience for them as they crossed the stage at Reed Arena on May 27.

“Jordan’s display of constant courage, even when the score was not in his favor, and his clutch plays in the most crucial moments have helped him leave his legacy on both sports and our culture,” she said. “In life there will be times when the odds are stacked against you, and you may feel like there’s no way to win. But I hope you persevere like Jordan did because pain is temporary, but progress is forever.”

Quoting Jordan, she said, it is because of the failures that they will succeed.

She encouraged her classmates to not get caught up in chasing trends or changing themselves to fit in with a certain crowd. No one should make them feel bad, dumb or stupid for being excited about something, she said.

“Being yourself never goes out of style,” she continued. “... So pursue what makes your wildest dreams come true because those who support you are always ready for it.”

Graduating high school means there will be change, but this change will help them each become who they are meant to be, she said, but one thing they should never change is being clever and kind.

“Never be so kind that you forget to be clever; never be so clever you forget to be kind,” Skaggs said. “Kindness is what makes the world go round, as you never know what challenges people are quietly facing, and you can make a difference in their lives with your kindness.”

Now they each have a chance to leave their legacy.

“Remember this, over time, banners fade, trophies tarnish, but the relationships made while being part of something bigger than yourself will last a lifetime,” she said. “Now, I just have one question for you: How will you leave a lasting legacy?”

Senior Class Officer Mariah Debose said they walked into the front doors of Rudder High School on the first day both apprehensive and excited. Then, they began making friends and learning how to do high school.

“Today we finish a chapter in our lives, and tomorrow a new one begins,” she said. “The Class of 2023 will definitely go down in history for all that we have made it, though. … If the past few years have taught us anything, it is that we are strong, and we can do what we need to be to be successful.”
