Bryan ISD Executive Leader Presents at Statewide Conference

Dr. Barbara Ybarra, Bryan ISD’s Associate Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, presented at the 9th Annual Chancellor’s Summit on Texas Education held at the Texas A&M International University in Laredo on Sept. 23-24. The annual event, sponsored by the office of Texas A&M University Chancellor John Sharp, hosts faculty and educators from throughout the Texas A&M University System.

During her session, Ybarra spoke about the importance of building school-university partnerships and provided examples of Bryan ISD’s successful partnership with A&M’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD).

“By partnering with CEHD, together we have been able to look at our needs as a district and what their needs are for developing future teachers,” Ybarra said.

She noted that these collaborations open the dialogue between universities and school districts, as colleges learn how to enhance the university experience as they equip students for the teaching profession.

Ybarra highlighted one collaborative effort that came from the partnership – “Reading Clinics” that will be opening at two Bryan ISD elementary schools this fall. CEHD undergraduate students, while supervised by an A&M professor, will work with select students on their reading skills at after-school programs at Jones and Fannin Elementary schools. Lessons will be tailored to the individual child’s reading needs as the college students work with them one-on-one.

“We’re hoping that more districts and universities can create meaningful partnerships as they work together to identify student needs and prepare future teachers for working in a school district,” Ybarra said. “We can both learn from each other and be able to do so much more together.”

Approximately 100 delegates – including A&M University senior leaders and district leaders from across the state – attended the conference, which focuses each year on teacher training programs and how best to prepare the next generation of educators.
